[Following is an official OnlineBookClub.org review of "Mama's not Home, She's in Heaven" by Dr. h.c. Kelly D. Smith.]
5 out of 5 stars
A little girl couldn't just get over the loss of her mom. The memorable moments with her mom couldn't just go away, and worse still, she still sees her mom in every item and routine linked to her. However, she is fortunate to have a great family, and her dad, grandma, and big sister are especially doing all they can to help her feel better. Will she be able to navigate this dark tunnel and allow her spirit to be warmed by the love all over her?
Mama's Not Home, She's in Heaven, a children's story written by Dr. h.c. Kelly D. Smith, explores one of the saddest realities of life: the loss of a dear one, and in this instance, the focus is on how this affects children. Our little girl misses her mom, her smiles, the bonding during bedtime routine, and in fact every great memory her mom has brought into her life. Of course every other character in this story is saddened by the incident, but it's obvious our little main character is having a harder time accepting this inevitable end of every living being and moving on. It is important, therefore, that the younger ones in the family are given special attention when sad incidents happen, since they are much more fragile and impressionable to the trauma that comes from these.
The story highlights the importance of open communication, as this helps those around us to understand whatever we are dealing with and offer assistance where they can. I am impressed with the way the dad addressed our main character's issues. In all these, the importance of strategy while handling children's emotions and concerns stands out. The story was properly illustrated, and the text was thoroughly proofread.
Mama's Not Home, She's in Heaven earns 5 out of 5 stars for its in-depth exploration of the theme of loss of a loved one and recovery. I didn't dislike anything in this book. This is a suitable read for every child, as it will help shape their understanding of death and help them navigate its overwhelming weight.
